Step -> Squat -> Scoop
Dealing with ground balls is the first skill in Lacrosse. As athletes learn to pass, catch, and cradle – they drop the ball. Don’t waste the learning opportunity!
Step
The lead foot wants to be close to the ball, it will protect the ball and help the athlete dominate the space around the ball. This position reminds me of a scrum-half at the back of a ruck. Wide legs and a step mean that you will already hopefully be in a squat!
Squat
Bend your knees – get low. You need your body low so that your stick is close to horizontal.
Scoop
Scoop and push through the ball!
The ball is off the ground! yay! As you lift your chest up, you want to protect the ball by cradling close to your chest. Think of a protective turtle shell on your back that will make it difficult for the defenders to check your stick.
Ready to progress? try your non-dominant side 🙂
There is lots of good stuff online to demonstrate. we like this video
